1st and 2nd Corps Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers: 1880

In 1880 the 1st and 3rd Administrative Battalions were consolidated into the 1st and 2nd Corps of the Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers.

1st Corps of the Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers

Formed on 10th July 1880 and comprised of 12 Companies with Headquarters at Derby:-

  • “A” (Derby) Company (previously 1st Corps)
  • “B” (Derby) Company (previously 4th Corps)
  • “C” (Derby) Company (previously 5th Corps)
  • “D” (Derby) Company (previously 5th Corps)
  • “E” (Butterley) Company (previously No. 1 Company of 12th Corps)
  • “F” (Condor) Company (previously No. 2 Company of 12th Corps)
  • “G” (Belper) Company (previously 13th Corps)
  • “H” (Derby) Company (previously 15th Corps)
  • “I” (Derby) Company (previously 15th Corps)
  • “K” (Derby) Company (previously 19th Corps)
  • “L” (Long Eaton) Company (previously 20th Corps)
  • “M” (Long Eaton) Company (previously 20th Corps and part of 13th Corps)

An Officer believed to be from The 1st Corps of the Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers (I V DERBY) which was formed from the 1st Admin Battalion on 10th July 1860 and consolidated as the new 1st Corps with 12 Companies in 1880.

2nd Corps of the Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers

Formed in 1880 and comprised of 10 Companies with Headquarters at Bakewell:-

  • “A” (Chesterfield) Company (previously 3rd Corps)
  • “B” (Chapel-en-le-Frith) Company (previously 7th Corps)
  • “C” (Ashbourne) Company (previously 8th Corps)
  • “D” (Bakewell) Company (previously 9th Corps)

  • “F” (Matlock) Company (previously 11th Corps)
  • “G” (Clay Cross) Company (previously 17th Corps)

        Am trying to trace an example of a 1st Derby Rifle Volunteers cloth helmet badge. I have a photo of some Derby School cadets wearing an unidentified helmet badge and wonder if it might be from this unit. It does not look like the one featured in the piece above. Can I email you a copy?

      There was a Mr J Potter at Woodside Farm near Eccles Pike (between Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith) who had some land that was linked with the Chapel-en-le-Frith Rifle Volunteers in the 1860s. I came across details when researching Volunteer shooting competitions for a booklet that is to be published on Furness Vale History Society website later this year.

      Sorry I don’t have any and I never seen a reference to a Stavely Volunteer rifle range. The Sherwood Foresters museum would know I think cheers Mike

      His name may appear on the Egyptian Campaign medal roles that should be available via ancestry. Other than that I’m sure where you could look. have you tried the Regimental Archivist for the Sherwood Foresters? cheers Mike

      Hi. I was looking at some late victorian maps of clay cross and happened to notice marked on it an 800yd rifle range . Ive googled it and can only find a couple of references to it. One is a shooting match with the Nottingham volunteers and a great war casualty whose address was range cottages clay cross. Have you any info on it?

    Hi Mike. I was recently looking at an old map of my home town of clay cross when i noticed that there was an 800yrd rifle range adjacent to the main Derby rd going out of clay cross towards morton. Ive looked on google and can pnlu find two references to it. One is a competition shoot by the Notts territorials there(with names and scores). Tge other slightly more tenuous is a great war casualty whose address was 2 range cottages. Have you any more information? id be very interested to read it.
